diana_coman: danielpbarron> my output quality changed mid craft run, didn't mix with old quality <- cool [14:42]
DicePower: My Eulora client silently crashes as soon as the client window appears, every time I run it. I experienced this issue months ago when I compiled 0.1.1, until it permanently resolved itself out of the blue. This time around I've noticed that "PS_PAUSEEXIT(1)" from line 1991 of psengine.cpp seems to be the culprit, thus the condition in line 1987, "if(!psengine->Initialize(0))" is problematically resolving as true. [15:09]
DicePower: Stepping through Initialize() illuminates a very strange execution path beginning with the PS_QUERY_PLUGIN(SoundManager, iSoundManager, "crystalspace.plantshift.sound.dummy") call at line 387. Stepping into it takes us to plugin.h from CrystalSpace. Once we step over this lower level code until we return to the PS_QUERY_PLUGIN() call, stepping in again jumps to ref.h, also from CrystalSpace. After stepping over this and [15:09]
DicePower: returning to psengine.cpp once more, the execution point hops back up several lines to PS_QUERY_PLUGIN(engine, iEngine, "iEngine") on line 379. After returning from stepping into and through this function (another CS file, reporter.h), psEngine::Initialize abruptly exits, presumably returning false. [15:09]
DicePower: This is the output from debugging without breakpoints: dpaste.com/23MMZMX Any ideas what is failing to load or going wrong? [15:11]

diana_coman: from what you say DicePower it looks like the configuration manager failing to initialise, suggesting it really is some problem of paths /files reall [16:25]
DicePower: diana_coman: That's where the strange execution order that I attempted to describe comes in. The 7 PS_QUERY_PLUGIN() functions each run once, then the iEngine one runs a second time, then the Initialize() function exits. [16:26]
diana_coman: so it fails on engine? [16:26]

diana_coman: and do you have the right configuration files ? [16:28]
DicePower: But I find it very odd that iEngine is run a second time in the first place. [16:28]
diana_coman: well, if it FINISHES running, then it can't be that one [16:28]
diana_coman: it starts the next one you say [16:28]
diana_coman: I can't say I understand what you mean there by run a second time but you do realise that the client there has several threads , right? [16:29]
DicePower: If it helps, I can make a short video of my debugging process, will just take a bit of time to do. [16:29]
DicePower: I'm pretty sure it's all on the main thread. [16:29]
diana_coman: better do what I asked for earlier [16:29]
diana_coman: get out of that vs which pollutes the output with can't find this and that [16:29]
diana_coman: run it from command line and paste somewhere the output [16:30]
DicePower: Just run the already-built psclient.exe from the command line? [16:31]
diana_coman: ftr the output you pasted earlier is mainly made out of "Cannot find or open the PDB file" which iirc is some VS debugging stuff that seems to work swimmingly like everything else, of course [16:31]
diana_coman: the one you built, yes [16:31]
diana_coman: in a command line window that remains open, yes [16:31]
DicePower: kk [16:32]
diana_coman: and to clarify: the client loads things on "levels" so it's probably that what you see when you say it runs x "a second time" [16:33]
Birdman: diana_coman could i commision a few high q cs for mixing? [16:36]
DicePower: diana_coman: There is no output whatsoever. [16:38]
diana_coman: Birdman, I bought cs, not really making them atm [16:38]
diana_coman: hm, DicePower not even "your configuration files are in.."? [16:39]
diana_coman: from everything you say it still sounds to me like some path/files/vars trouble really [16:39]
DicePower: The client window pops up and silently crashes as in VS. To clarify, I just navigated to the Eulora folder and typed psclient.exe. I get nothing at all in the command prompt, not even the configuration file thing. [16:40]
DicePower: Just goes straight to a new line to type another command. [16:41]
diana_coman: ugh, isn't it euclient on windows? [16:41]
diana_coman: I asked about that because that's the first thing it normally outputs so it really fails indeed before initializing even the config manager [16:43]
DicePower: Not on my install. I have an euclient.cfg and euclient.dbg, but the .exe is psclient.exe [16:43]
DicePower: Tying this in with mircea_popescu's earlier comment, I do have a file errorlog.txt in the Eulora folder. It's completely empty. [16:46]
diana_coman: hmmm, reading back from my adventures on the wiki: are you running the exe from the main folder or the one from the out folder? [16:46]
DicePower: The main folder. [16:47]
diana_coman: no, he meant something else: there should be some .log files in Eulora's folder wherever that is on Windows [16:47]
diana_coman: possibly in your user's folder? [16:47]
diana_coman: no idea where they are really [16:47]
DicePower: Oh like in AppData or something? [16:47]
diana_coman: myeah, something like that [16:48]
diana_coman: there is also point 11 on the wiki that suggests some potential crash on startup [16:48]
diana_coman: and if you got a fresh cs thing it's quite possible the culprit [16:49]
DicePower: 5.12 MB is the total size of my Eulora folder in AppData/Roaming [16:49]
DicePower: Which is the folder with logs and other things. [16:49]
DicePower: Okay, I did step 11 before, but maybe those files were deleted with the fresh install. [16:51]
diana_coman: doesn't sound like a problem really; anyway that would fail at a later stage iirc [16:51]
diana_coman: well, if you got cs fresh... [16:51]
mircea_popescu: client is known to crash if, iirc, single logfile > 20mb. so that wouldn 't be it. [16:53]
DicePower: hmmm [16:53]
mircea_popescu: anyway, what is your goal here, to run the game, or to figure out how to compile c on windows or what exactly ? [16:54]
diana_coman: DicePower, did you do that step 11 again? at this stage it's the only thing that fits the trouble you report [16:55]
DicePower: mircea_popescu: The goal is to be able to run and modify the client. [16:56]
mircea_popescu: okay. so you started with the 0.1.2b code and are now trying to compile it ? [16:56]
DicePower: Yes [16:56]
mircea_popescu: and you're not able to produce a binary that runs, ie, it crashes silently on start-up [16:57]
DicePower: diana_coman: I have not. I will give that a try. [16:57]
DicePower: mircea_popescu: Correct [16:57]
mircea_popescu: diana_coman i thought that was included in 1.2 anyway. [16:57]
diana_coman: mircea_popescu, what exactly? [16:59]
mircea_popescu: data-cs [16:59]
diana_coman: I had no problem doing a fresh install on linux; have no idea about windows though and the wiki says : from the wiki: 11. If you did not do it while installing Eulora 0.1.0, the \%CRYSTAL\%/data must be updated with contents of June12015/data-cs folder11. If you did not do it while installing Eulora 0.1.0, the \%CRYSTAL\%/data must be updated with contents of June12015/data-cs folder [17:02]
diana_coman: so cs/data [17:02]
mircea_popescu: yeah but that's from like 9 months ago. we did a "small" version update after 0.1 which relied on it, like a add-on [17:02]
mircea_popescu: and i think that's when that page is from [17:02]
diana_coman: I suppose we could do with a check at least and then update the wiki [17:03]
mircea_popescu: ye [17:04]
DicePower: It appears that \%CRYSTAL\%/data/ does already contain the contents of /Eulora-V0.1.2-win32-full/Eulora/cs/data (from the binary install). [17:12]
mircea_popescu: cool. [17:13]
DicePower: The only minor difference I immediately see is that the ubuntu font family zipped folder is actually slightly larger in CS than in the Eulora binary install. [17:14]
DicePower: There are 80 items in my \%CRYSTAL\%/data/ folder. [17:15]

diana_coman: DicePower, it seems that you either get some more detailed debug info (maybe use windbg or fix vs so it is actually useful there?) or otherwise figure out how you sorted this out last time? [17:23]
DicePower: The latter seems unlikely. I didn't even understand at the time what happened. [17:24]
DicePower: It just started working seemingly out of nowhere. [17:24]
diana_coman: I updated the wiki page to take out that 11. since it's not relevant anymore in any case [17:25]
DicePower: I'll try getting better debug info. [17:25]
diana_coman: ugh, given windows stuff it might be worth a try then to... reboot, lol [17:25]
DicePower: lol [17:26]
DicePower: Already done it unfortunately [17:26]
diana_coman: <DicePower> It just started working seemingly out of nowhere. <- because of this, I meant [17:26]
mircea_popescu: yeah, do you have "service pack 1" and whatever other windows arcana ? [17:26]
DicePower: I do have SP1 successfully installed, yes. [17:26]
mircea_popescu: this "started working out ofg the blue" thing is usually a missing library etc. which is why diana_coman was suspecting missing files. [17:27]
DicePower: This is all I have to go on from last time, not much :P http://dpaste.com/17AB7R8 [17:29]
DicePower: Might try manually building all of the projects listed on the Windows install wiki page, rather than just libgui and apppsclient. [17:30]
DicePower: Dunno about the order though. [17:31]
mircea_popescu: well, if you get it working make sure to record what you did. [17:31]
danielpbarron: the max number of feelings my tinkerer toil wants has been steadily decreasing from ~4050 towards 4000 over the course of the last few days, and despite me crafting them the whole time! that is, i'm ranking up in tinkering and lapidary! [17:31]
diana_coman: you say there: 2) built the solution instead of rebuilding it (I chose build before, but that was at the beginning). [17:31]
mircea_popescu: danielpbarron same for my dusts. [17:31]
diana_coman: I can only wish I could say I saw a similar decrease in the number of grc going into a wwb ord , lol [17:32]
danielpbarron: also, my output decreased from 80 to 79 at some point, and following that the quality i expected went up from 348 to 349, and later again to 350, still 79 quantity [17:32]
DicePower: diana_coman: This time around, I've been using Clean + Build all along anyhow, so nothing there to try. [17:33]
danielpbarron: this is remarkable because other blueprints seem to give greater output based on greater rank. these toils seem at first pass to be decreasing ingredient/output as rank goes up. the alt explaination is that one or more other players are ranking up lapidary and/or tinkering faster than i am [17:34]
DicePower: mircea_popescu: If it's not magic again, I'll remember what fixes it :P [17:34]
danielpbarron: and i find that hard to believe because each of these toils is a little under 1 rank up for me. i'm processing quite a bit of value per second [17:34]
diana_coman: danielpbarron, maybe you are bringing the q down or something? [17:39]
danielpbarron: of the bundle? [17:39]
danielpbarron: no. i have pre-made 32 bundles at quality 700 [17:39]
diana_coman: DicePower, looking back in the logs this thing stands out being as it is from March...last year: DicePower Plus I feel like I'm at the "almost there" point now. [17:40]
diana_coman: http://logs.minigame.bz/2016-03-20.log.html#t20:52:36 [17:40]
lobbesbot: Logged on 2016-03-20 20:52:36: <DicePower> Plus I feel like I'm at the "almost there" point now. [17:40]
diana_coman: for completeness, lol [17:40]
danielpbarron: it defo takes less time to learn to gentoo already [17:40]
danielpbarron: takes ~week for parts you ordered to arrive, and let's say a week or two to figure out how to put gentoo on it [17:41]
diana_coman: danielpbarron, you said you are processing a lot of value there and from what I gather you are actually working +ev there so getting a lot of value OUT; hence, I meant in a more similar way to what happens when you pop on building for instance [17:41]
danielpbarron: yes this is a strictly profitable run [17:42]
danielpbarron: an undercraft if you will [17:42]
danielpbarron: over 100k per click [17:42]
diana_coman: so you are basically "popping" if not in so many words; maybe that brings q down, no? [17:42]
DicePower: Well I was almost there. This was the last hurdle before being able to actually mod the game :D [17:42]
danielpbarron: well my quality is going up [17:42]
danielpbarron: and that i expected actually [17:43]
danielpbarron: what i didn't expect was the required ingredients to go down [17:43]
diana_coman: ah, I see [17:43]
danielpbarron: actually maybe the increased output quality is a little surprising. ditto the decreased quantity [17:44]
diana_coman: DicePower, you know, you were "almost there", you are "almost there" and in all probability you'll continue to be "almost there", one might wonder what did a whole year do then, no? [17:44]
danielpbarron: a noob crafter can make one output per click, and the ingredients required are minimum [17:44]
danielpbarron: i guess it's a case of nothing linear [17:45]
danielpbarron: i got up so high in rank that at this stage, going forward means less quantity higher quality, but also more efficiently than someone of lower rank getting the same of either of the two values [17:45]
DicePower: diana_coman: "There" meant "having access to modding the code" :P Trying to get "there" a second time now. lol [17:45]
diana_coman: DicePower, you DO realise that creating even 100 characters is not exactly modding the code, right? [17:46]
DicePower: I guess I don't understand that. [17:47]
diana_coman: just realises that in 1 year one could have done this "research" manually even, lolz [17:47]
diana_coman: what do you mean by "modding the code"? [17:47]
DicePower: Well it's not like I spent a year of my time working on this, it just got pushed to the side for months :P [17:48]
mircea_popescu: diana_coman i imagine he's trying to do something like foxybot, like change something and wow it works. [17:48]
mircea_popescu: it's exhilirating as a first time experience, no doubt. [17:48]
DicePower: Well, modding the code to create a new character and login when I start the program. Then it will record some values in Excel such as carried weight, and finally exit the program. [17:49]
danielpbarron: EXCEL?? [17:49]
diana_coman: mircea_popescu, I think you applied too much imagination there in your imagining ^ [17:50]
danielpbarron: literally face palming [17:50]
DicePower: Microsoft Excel, part of the Microsoft Office package :D [17:50]
mircea_popescu: lel. [17:50]
lobbes: also despises Excel with a burning passion [17:50]
mircea_popescu: basically, dude's got a bunch of shocking defaults in his brain, will take a while to clear through them. [17:50]
mircea_popescu: who the fuck uses excel. [17:50]
DicePower: Microsoft Windows users. [17:50]
diana_coman: then there will be an excel modding for ...adding the values? subtracting them? well, doing something with the values, record the new values in... Access! [17:50]
diana_coman: and then exiting Excel, too! [17:51]
danielpbarron: i use it on my phone like how i would doodle on a napkin. i wouldn't go to the trouble of coding some thing that outputs to it!! [17:51]
DicePower: I guess everyone prefers Open Office? [17:51]
mircea_popescu: danielpbarron bash loads up way the fuck faster than excell. [17:51]
mircea_popescu: DicePower no, nobody uses the shit omfg. why. [17:51]
lobbes: I only use it when *forced* to, like when I'm sitting on spike for 8 hours each day. In my own castle, that shit is banned [17:52]
DicePower: Lightweight storing/viewing data? [17:52]
danielpbarron: most lightweight is put it in a .txt [17:52]
DicePower: When you don't need a database. [17:52]
lobbes: then use a flatfile? [17:53]
diana_coman: ahahah, as I was saying: ACCESS!!! [17:53]
DicePower: I don't mind access but it's probably more than I need. [17:53]
mircea_popescu: flatfile. [17:53]
lobbes: plaintext is a light as it gets! [17:53]
DicePower: Well Excel does graphs and such :D [17:54]
diana_coman: DicePower, Excel has many faults but to focus on a single fundamental one: it handicaps you more than it can ever help [17:54]
DicePower: What is the problem with spreadsheets? [17:54]
mircea_popescu: they make you think stupid. [17:54]
DicePower: Well, I'm open to changing my mind on this. Spreadsheets just seemed like the most obvious choice. [17:55]
lobbes: they are toys that make people think they are doing something [17:55]
diana_coman: lobbes, they actually keep making something for people to do, yeah; the same something; 1001 times; repeatedly etc [17:55]
lobbes: ^^ this [17:56]
lobbes: yet, entire enterprises (big ones, mind you) seem to *run* on it [17:56]
lobbes: it boggles my mind each day [17:56]
diana_coman: DicePower, anyways, meanwhile people actually figured out something re Eulora namely: it's easy and profitable to be a noob! so you know, all you need to do is to...start the game; lol! [17:56]
mircea_popescu: lobbes hey, sikrit agents!! [17:56]
diana_coman: DicePower> Well, I'm open to changing my mind on this. Spreadsheets just seemed like the most obvious choice. [17:58]
diana_coman: like all obvious choices, it's a poor one [17:58]
DicePower: Well, the first question to ask is why I want to store data, right? [17:58]
danielpbarron: well i also figured out it is even more profitable to not be a noob [17:58]
diana_coman: danielpbarron, that is a personal thing really; when you are not a noob, it is more profitable to not be a noob, yeah [17:59]
danielpbarron: yeah [17:59]
diana_coman: DicePower, entertain me with the answer to that; add to it answer to: what data is that and what does it actually MEAN? [18:00]
DicePower: And the answer is, I want to store one or more thousand samples, each with several metrics, and see the highest/lowest values of these metrics, correlations between metrics/perhaps see the data graphically. [18:00]
diana_coman: pictures! graphics! it's SCIENCE! [18:00]
danielpbarron: gnuplot ahem [18:01]
diana_coman: not to mention thousand samples and the magic words...correlations!!! [18:01]
DicePower: A text file seems not powerful enough, and a database would work, but is perhaps overkill. [18:01]
danielpbarron: txt + gnuplot = graph [18:01]
diana_coman: DicePower, a text file is more than enough; there is also R if you really must otherwise [18:01]
DicePower: That sounds like Linux [18:01]
diana_coman: but the trouble is not the tools [18:01]
danielpbarron: more importantly, txt file + anyting = whatever you want [18:02]
diana_coman: it's the fact that you can more easily just draw some graphs now, doodle them and they will be quite equal in value [18:02]
diana_coman: danielpbarron, what if he wants...xls, a? HA? [18:03]
danielpbarron: it'd be more valuable for you to learn linux than to learn whatever you are trying to learn about eulora character stat distribution [18:03]
DicePower: So leaving qualms with design philosophy, Microsoft hatred, etc. aside, what advantage would be gained for a task like this by using a text file and a second program, as opposed to Excel? [18:03]
danielpbarron: DicePower, that's basically what you are doing anyway. doesn't excel just take a csv file? that's a txt [18:03]
diana_coman: DicePower, to focus on a single one: you'd be able to *change* *very easily* what you want as output [18:04]
DicePower: hmmmm [18:04]
danielpbarron: it's just funny that you are coding something to feed into excel when presumably you could also code something to interpret the data that's more specific to your data [18:04]
Framedragger: DicePower: consider using ipython notebooks for this (looks like this, http://nbviewer.jupyter.org/urls/gist.github.com/wesm/4757075/raw/a72d3450ad4924d0e74fb57c9f62d1d895ea4574/PandasTour.ipynb ) no lock-in to stupid formats or entire platforms, etc etc. [18:04]
mircea_popescu: does r even exist in windoze ? [18:05]
diana_coman: notes that asking about actual meaning and usefulness of "data" is now "wualms with design philosophy" lmao [18:05]
Framedragger: DicePower: or, yeah, just text and bash (you can run it under windows) :) [18:05]
diana_coman: mircea_popescu, yeah, it does, it's portable [18:05]
diana_coman: iirc there is even some graphical interface all shiny and that [18:06]
diana_coman: there is even R for Mac (me had to use Mac at some point, grrrr) [18:06]
Framedragger: (it's good for quickly prototyping shit and and plotting data, *if* there is actual merit in doing the latter, cf. visualizing because big data iz web scale nao) [18:07]
mircea_popescu: why not use gplot like sane people anyway. [18:07]
diana_coman: because it's not the obvious choice!!! [18:07]
DicePower: I will always choose a program with a graphical user interface over a program without one :P [18:08]
DicePower: Unless it's like, a BTC miner or something, and I just need to past one command in to start it. [18:09]
Framedragger: :) it is easier to have a single place to do both data cleansing/processing as well as visualization. but then one may argue that 'bash shell' could be that place, so, fair point.. [18:09]
mircea_popescu: anyway, whatever, workflow, everyone's got his own and etcetera. [18:09]
DicePower: I will check out all the listed alternatives in more detail when I get a bit more time and maybe reconsider Excel. [18:09]
DicePower: I didn't really give it much thought, it's just what I've always used for this sort of thing. [18:10]
diana_coman: mircea_popescu, well, I did say that tools are not the real issue here; but the tools at least got an answer as it were [18:10]
mircea_popescu: myeah. [18:11]
DicePower: Thank you everyone for perhaps another instance of software enlightenment :P [18:11]

danielpbarron: i think these are sufficiently hard to get at this point for all to stare and wonder at how i came upon so many at such high quality! this is the culmination of weeks of intermediate crafting and planning [19:20]
danielpbarron: i'm putting up for sale only 10\% of what i expect to craft in total [19:20]
danielpbarron: and because i'm sure someone will ask, TPS is sentiments, the 2nd tier tinkerer numina, used in apprentice tinkerer conceptions and drudgery of tinkering [19:21]

danielpbarron: not that i'm saying someone necessarily ~should~ bid more. i don't care either way. it's useful to know what i could sell the sentiments for, when calculating the profit of considerations and drudgeries [20:13]

Birdman: theres just not many people to buy [20:22]
Birdman: danielpbarron can i borrow a ppb bp? [20:26]
danielpbarron: i'm not complaining. just that if there's a steady demand for these then that's the price they'll have to go for if i'm gonna be involved in steadily producing them. actually i wouldn't mind going a little under since making them lets me rank up pretty fast [20:27]
Birdman: you wouldnt be faulted in holding on to things that aren't being bought for the right price [20:27]
danielpbarron: or i'll just use 'em myself [20:28]
Birdman: big changes have been made too so theres probably maths needed to be found out before figuring alot of these prices out [20:28]

DicePower: "<DicePower> It appears that \%CRYSTAL\%/data/ does already contain the contents of /Eulora-V0.1.2-win32-full/Eulora/cs/data (from the binary install)." Hmmm, turns out I didn't reinstall the CS folder from scratch, only Eulora, so that explains why the files are still there. So maybe it doesn't warrant keeping Step 11 out of the guide after all. [21:31]
mircea_popescu: the... what ? [21:40]
DicePower: The files we were discussing earlier are to be copied to a folder in CrystalSpace, not Eulora. So I they weren't wiped when I started a fresh Eulora install. [21:54]
mircea_popescu: just put the whole 0.1.2b package as it is in a new working directory in a new project. [21:54]
mircea_popescu: you have the sloppiest, most confused, randomly "oh wait" approach to this. it's about on par with a oliver and stanley movie. [21:55]
DicePower: XD [21:55]
DicePower: I was just commenting on the removal of Step 11 from the wiki. [21:56]
